The label of the majority of Quaker Oats products contains a claim “100% Natural Whole Grain”, as well as the text “Old Fashioned” in bold.
This marketing has persuaded numerous customers to consume their products and feel absolutely comfortable while doing so, but the company has been recently sued due to their misleading tactic in the label.
The lawsuit was filed after the plaintiffs had a test conducted to analyze the contents of Quaker Oats Quick 1-Minute oatmeal. The test was conducted in an independent lab in California which used liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, a technique commonly used chemical and medical labs for drug research.
The results of the test found traces of glyphosate in the sample that was used, and although the amount that was detected was technically under the legal allowable limits, the lawsuit accused Quaker of “false advertising” due to the claim that their products are “100% Natural”.
A statement released by the Quaker Oats Company claimed that they did not add the chemical glyphosate into their oatmeal, and that it was likely the result of residue left by pesticides sprayed on the oats by farmers.
“Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are trace amounts and significantly below any limits which have been set by the E.P.A. as safe for human consumption,” the company said.
This chemical is widely used in U.S. so many food activists are against the usage of glyphosate, claiming that this chemical causes cancer and other health issues.
In 2015, these pesticides were categorized as “probable” cause of cancer by IRAC (International Agency for Research on Cancer ), which is part of World Health Organization.
Not only this pesticide was accused to cause cancer, but it can also lead to birth defects. There was a study, conducted in Paraguay, that has shown this pesticide doubled birth defect risks, in one kilometer from area where is sprayed.
Explanation is that glyphosate interfere and reduce the amount of vitamin A, one of the essential vitamins for our life and fetal development as well.
In farming communities, experts have shown there is a strong correlation between Attention Deficit Disorder and glyphosate exposure because it interfere with thyroid hormone functions and hormone serotonin, which is a hormone that regulates mood, thus its level changes in the blood may lead to depression or euphoria , sleep disorder or appetite changes.
However, oats have so many health benefits for our body. Oatmeal is still one of the best breakfast alternatives. So, don’t exclude them from your diet, but choose wisely. Don’t go for cheap alternatives, they can be packed with pesticides harmful for your health. Buy organic oats and enjoy your favorite breakfast without worries.
