Avocados are a stone fruit with a creamy texture that grow in warm climates and are often a feature of Mexican and South American cuisine.
Also known as an alligator pear or butter fruit, the versatile avocado is the only fruit that provides a substantial amount of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). Avocados are a naturally nutrient-dense food and contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals.

Few things compare to the disappointment of getting ready to eat an avocado and realizing it isn’t ripe yet.Often, the selection in grocery stores ranges from rock hard to overripe. If you’re left with nothing but unripened avocados that need to be used ASAP, you can speed up their process with just 10 minutes and a little heat.
Start by gathering your ingredients: a baking sheet, tin foil, and the avocado you have your heart set on. While you pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees, wrap your little green fruit in tin foil and place it on the baking sheet. After that, just pop the sheet in the oven and count to 10 (minutes). And voila: your avocado should be good to go. You’ll want to give it some time to cool off in your fridge before you dig in, but seriously—it’s that easy.
So how does the trick to Ripening Avocados in minutes work, exactly? Basically: Avocados produce ethylene gas, which is typically released slowly, causing the fruit to ripen. But as the avocado bakes in tinfoil, the gas surrounds it, putting the ripening process into hyperdrive. Guac and avocado toast for all!(Many other fruits like bananas, peaches, and tomatoes do the same.) Placing an avocado in a sealed paper bag will have a similar effect (capturing the gas and accelerating the ripening), though this will likely take days as opposed to minutes.
Try it for yourself, and say good bye to unripe avocados.
